How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump
